Joannie’s poems:

Baku (the nightmare eater)
  • This 9-line poem is a butterfly cinquain. A 9-line poem is also known as a nonostich, but the butterfly cinquain follows the syllable pattern of a 5-line cinquain, then reverses it, creating a poem with a count of 2/4/6/8/2/8/6/4/2 syllables per line.
  •  I initially wrote a haiku poem about Baku, but the editor suggested expanding to a butterfly cinquain to share more information about this friendly beast from Japan.
Earthquake! A Poem for Two Voices
  • Different creatures are blamed for the earthquakes that rock Japan, which gave me the perfect opportunity to write a free verse poem for two voices—telling a story from the point-of-view of two creatures: the Jinshin-Mushi (dragon-headed beetle) and the Jinshin-Namazu (giant catfish).
  •  This poem is written for two people to perform and read out loud together. Earthquake! has three columns: one person reads the left column, one person reads the right column, and together they read the middle column, lines shared by both the beetle and the catfish.
